Devil's Elbow is located just down the path from the Coast Guard house at Heceta Head on the Oregon coast. This image, made at dusk, is from a 4 minute exposure on Kodachrome 25 film. Kodachrome experiences something called "reciprocity failure" when exposed for long periods of time. The failure results in the color going more towards magenta, which I think is a success for this image. With a long exposure, the camera collects the light of the setting sun off of the continual wave action. This makes the waves look like a mist and also lighter than to the naked eye. This photograph is extremely difficult to print. It takes four separate exposures to even out the density. I cut an elaborate cardboard "dodging tool" in the shape of the islands. During the print exposure, this is held between the enlarger and the paper to keep the islands black during the very long exposure to lighten up the wave area. Arm cramps are guaranteed but the results are satisfying.
