"The Bathhouse"

Location: The Alhambra, Granada, Spain
Catalog Number: 1664

The Alhambra in Granada, Spain was the palace of the Moorish sultan. These elaborate and ornate buildings were meant to last only the lifetime of the sultan, a new one being built by each successor. In 1492, when the Catholic King and Queen demanded that all non-Catholics either convert or leave the country, the Islamic ruler abandoned the palace, which remains to this day. This was the bathhouse in the palace. The intricate tilework is reminiscent of the complex, eye- and mind-bending work of the Dutch graphic artist, M.C. Escher. I waited about 20 minutes to get this exposure without a tourist in it. After another 20 minutes, I gave up on trying to get a second exposure.
