"Trust encouraging Right Action to shed its Fears"

Location: Priory of Salagon, France
Catalog Number: 2692

Granted, this title and the image itself requires a bit of elucidation. This 12th century Benedictine priory is in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region of southern France. The nave was the site of an art installation which consisted of these bark shavings spread around the base of the noble column. For some reason, months after having returned from the trip, I was awake in the middle of the night and could not get the image of this priory and several others from nearby Cistercian monasteries out of my mind. They begged for some deeper reference. So I decided to view these images as parables. In this one, I see the light as being “Trust,” the column “Right Action,” and the bark shavings “Fears.” What’s your take? If you’d like to see a couple more from this series, type in “Parables” in the search function field in the footer of any of my website pages.
