Artists' Palette

Location: Death Valley, California
Catalog Number: 746

Artist's Palette is the name given to the group of badland-type sandstone formations in Death Valley, California. The coloration comes from mineral deposits. A compelling landscape, it took me three passes to find the right time of day to achieve the flat - almost paper collage - look I wanted. While I usually photograph early or late in the day, or under overcast skies, this was taken at sunny midday, with the overhead light casting very little shadow on the receding series of hills. I had the privilege of taking a workshop with Ansel Adams in 1983. He was surprised at seeing so much color in some of the places he had also photographed and selected this print for his personal collection.
