Vernal Falls

Location: Yosemite Naitonal Park, California
Catalog Number: 2521

This photograph was made with black and white infrared film. It is a heat sensitive film that picks up the infrared portion of the light spectrum. There is no ASA rating (film speed) for this film, so one has to take a guess as to how much infrared light is available in any given situation and expose accordingly. While photographing in Hawaii, I totally underestimated the extreme amount of infrared light that islands closer to the Equator receive. I returned to develop 5 rolls of film that were entirely blasted. Nevertheless, I do enjoy the unpredictable nature of the film and the ethereal, etching-like quality that it produces. The warmth of the green foliage produces a white, frosty look with infrared which would be dark in a regular black and white print. And while the leaves look white, their cool reflections are dark.
