"Nehi"

Location: Deerfield, Colorado
Catalog Number: 444

I stopped to photograph a group of abandoned buildings located in the plains of Colorado after we had driven through a series of thunderstorms. The sky lhad that eerie steel grey appearance that often spawns tornadoes. The sun dipped beneath the storm clouds and illuminated the side of the buildings. This classic orange “Nehi” sign was being used as a “shade” in the window of what was a mess hall. I recently learned that these buildings in Deerfield, Colorado were erected in 1910 by O.T. Jackson, a black businessman hoping to establish a black farming community in the West. He operated the filling station here until 1946.
